Understanding knee pain

There are many causes and symptoms of knee pain. It may affect you as a sharp ache after movement, a dull throb that won’t go away, or stiffness in the morning. We are here to help you get to the root of the problem.

Structural

Cartilage loss and joint wear

Knee cartilage loss and joint wear happen when the smooth cushioning inside the knee gradually breaks down. This can develop from aging, previous injuries, repetitive stress, excess body weight, or poor joint alignment.

As the cartilage wears down, the knee may become painful, stiff, swollen, or harder to move. Some patients may also feel grinding, clicking, or pain with walking, stairs, squatting, or standing for long periods.

Common conditions we treat:

  • Knee Osteoarthritis
  • Meniscus Tears
  • Cartilage Defects
  • Bone Marrow Edema / Bone Marrow Lesions
  • Patellofemoral Arthritis
Soft Tissue

Tendon, ligament, muscle, and bursa injuries

Soft tissue knee conditions affect the tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bursae that support and stabilize the knee. These problems can develop from overuse, sports injuries, repetitive stress, muscle weakness, poor movement patterns, or sudden twisting injuries.

When these tissues become irritated or damaged, the knee may become painful, swollen, weak, or unstable. Some patients may also feel tenderness, stiffness, clicking, or pain with walking, stairs, kneeling, squatting, running, or standing for long periods.

Common conditions we treat:

  • Patellar Tendinitis and Tendinopathy
  • Quadriceps Tendinitis and Tendinopathy
  • Muscle Strains and Partial Tears
  • Knee Bursitis
Nerve Related

Nerve irritation, compression, and injury

Nerve-related knee conditions occur when the nerves around the knee become irritated, compressed, stretched, or damaged. These problems can develop from injuries, surgery, swelling, repetitive pressure, scar tissue, or conditions affecting the lower back.

When a nerve is involved, the knee may feel painful, burning, numb, tingling, or unusually sensitive. Some patients may also experience weakness, shooting pain, or symptoms that travel into the thigh, lower leg, or foot.

Common conditions we treat:

  • Peroneal Nerve Entrapment
  • Saphenous Nerve Entrapment
  • Genicular Nerve Pain
  • Post-Surgical Nerve Pain
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy

Process

Your path from pain to function

We start with a full evaluation to build a treatment plan that is right for you.

Step one: evaluation

Dr. Cherubini examines you, reviews imaging, and listens to your story to understand what’s really wrong.

Step two: customized treatment plan

Based on your condition and goals, we may recommend stem cells, PRP, shockwave therapy, or a combination of treatments.

Step three: recovery and results

Most patients resume normal activities within days and see continued improvement over weeks and months.

“When I came to Dr. Cherubini I could barely walk. After having Stem Cell treatments, my knee pain vanished but my ligaments acted up (former dancer). Dr. Cherubini resolved all the problems and I am walking better now than a decade ago. The staff is knowledgeable and kind. I am so glad I found Dr. Cherubini.”
