The benefits of shockwave for Plantar Fasciitis are very well-documented, with many studies demonstrating its effectiveness.
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain in the foot. It could result from long periods of standing, obesity, use of inappropriate footwear, excessive running by inexperienced runners, etc…
More than 2 million patients are treated for plantar fasciitis every year, with a treatment cost estimated between 192 and 376 million dollars a year.
Treatments include insoles, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections, physical therapy, and shock wave therapy.
However, shock wave therapy (SWT) has been growing in popularity as it is a non-invasive, risk-free procedure that quickly repairs tissue and bone.
Clinical Study: In a four-dose shockwave research study of chronic plantar fasciitis, the objective was to evaluate its effectiveness considering pain, function, and quality of life.
Data from 56 patients were measured at three, six, and twelve weeks.
Discussion: In the sample, patients saw quick improvement in pain, seen after 3 weeks and later in the remaining periods of re-evaluation, up to 12 weeks.
No complications or risks of SWT were found. Other studies have also considered the application of shock waves as a safe procedure.
Conclusion: The study concluded that shock wave therapy is effective for plantar fasciitis lowering pain levels, increasing function, and quality of life.
